1. What We Don't Collect
KiloCal collects nothing. Not names, not emails, not food logs, not usage data. The app is designed to work entirely offline, with zero network calls for user data.
Zero Collection Means:
- No personal information — No name, email, phone, or account
- No food logs uploaded — Meals, recipes, calories stay local
- No health data sent — Weight, activity, HealthKit stays on your device
- No location tracking — We don't request or access location
- No device IDs — No unique identifiers collected
- No analytics — We don't track how you use the app
- No crash reports — No automatic error reporting
- No contacts, photos, or other apps' data
2. How KiloCal Works
Local Storage Only
All your data is stored locally on your device using iOS's secure storage APIs. This includes:
- Food logs and meal history
- Saved recipes
- Weight entries
- Calorie goals and activity settings
- App preferences (units, appearance, etc.)
No Account, No Cloud Sync
KiloCal works without an account. There's no sign-up, no login, no password. Your data isn't synced to any server, cloud service, or third-party platform.
Offline by Design
The app works 100% offline. The food database (USDA FoodData Central) is bundled with the app. No internet connection is required after installation.
3. Food Database & Data Sources
KiloCal uses two trusted food databases to power food search and nutrition data:
- USDA FoodData Central — U.S. Department of Agriculture's public domain nutritional database of 300,000+ foods
- Open Food Facts — A collaborative, open-source database of food products worldwide, licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL)
These databases are not personal data. They're publicly available nutritional references. When you search for "chicken breast" or scan a barcode, KiloCal matches your query against these databases and returns the results.
4. HealthKit Integration (Optional)
KiloCal offers optional integration with Apple HealthKit to read:
- Active Energy — Calories burned through movement
- Steps — Daily step count
- Weight — If you log weight in Apple Health
You Control HealthKit Access
HealthKit integration is entirely optional. The app works fully without it. If you grant access:
- Data is read only when you open the app
- HealthKit data stays on your device and is never uploaded
- You can revoke access anytime via iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → KiloCal
- We don't write data to HealthKit (read-only access)
5. Camera Access (Optional)
KiloCal requests camera access only if you choose to scan food barcodes. This feature is entirely optional—you can search and log foods manually instead.
What Happens When You Scan
- The camera processes the barcode locally on your device
- The barcode number is matched against the bundled food database (offline)
- No images are captured, stored, or transmitted
- No barcode data leaves your device
6. Cross-Promotion of Other Apps
KiloCal displays promotional banners for other apps in the Maneo House portfolio (e.g., Skrim, owlWriter). These are "house ads"—first-party promotions, not third-party advertising.
What This Means
- No tracking — We don't track which promos you view or tap
- No targeting — Promos aren't personalized based on your behavior
- No third parties — No ad networks, no data sharing with advertisers
- Privacy-preserving — The promo system fetches a static list of apps (no user data sent)
7. Data You Share (Optional)
KiloCal includes an optional Day Sharing feature. If you choose to share a food log:
- You generate a
.kcaldayfile (a local export) - You choose how to share it (AirDrop, Messages, email, etc.)
- The file is shared only with the recipient you select
- No data is sent to Maneo House or any server
- Only the recipient with KiloCal installed can open and view the file
You are in complete control of what you share and with whom.
8. No Third-Party Services
KiloCal does not integrate with any third-party services, SDKs, or analytics platforms. This includes:
- No Google Analytics, Firebase, Mixpanel, or similar
- No Facebook SDK, advertising networks, or attribution tools
- No cloud storage providers (AWS, Google Cloud, etc.)
- No social media logins or sharing integrations
9. Data Deletion
Because all your data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control over deletion:
Delete All Data
- Uninstall the app — Deleting KiloCal from your device permanently removes all food logs, recipes, weight entries, and settings
- iOS automatically deletes app data when you uninstall
Delete Specific Data
Within the app, you can:
- Delete individual food entries
- Clear entire meals
- Remove saved recipes
- Delete weight log entries
No data deletion requests are needed because we never have your data in the first place.
10. Children's Privacy
KiloCal is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. Because the app doesn't collect any personal information at all, there's no risk of inadvertently collecting children's data.
Parents: If you believe your child is using KiloCal, rest assured that no personal information is being collected or transmitted.
11. Changes to This Policy
If we make changes to this privacy policy, we will:
- Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page
- Post the new policy at kilocal.maneo.house/privacy
- If changes are significant, we'll notify users via an in-app message
Core Commitment: We will never introduce data collection, tracking, or cloud sync without your explicit, informed consent.
12. Legal Basis (GDPR/CCPA Compliance)
Because KiloCal does not collect, process, or store any personal data:
- GDPR — No personal data is processed, so GDPR obligations (consent, right to erasure, etc.) don't apply
- CCPA — No personal information is sold or shared with third parties
- Data Controller — You are the sole controller of your data (it's on your device)
