Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. KiloCal is 100% free with no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no ads. All features are unlocked for everyone—calorie tracking, macro logging, fasting timer, barcode scanning, unlimited recipes, and lifetime history.
No. KiloCal works without an account. Download the app, complete the quick setup, and start logging. Your data stays on your device—no cloud sync, no login.
All your data (food logs, recipes, weight entries, settings) is stored locally on your device. Nothing is uploaded to servers or synced to the cloud. Your data is yours alone.
Yes. The USDA food database is bundled with the app, so you can search and log foods offline. No internet connection is required after installation.
HealthKit integration is optional. If you grant access, KiloCal reads your active energy (calories burned), steps, and weight to calculate your dynamic calorie budget. HealthKit data never leaves your device. You can revoke access anytime in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → KiloCal.
Not currently. KiloCal is local-only by design for maximum privacy. Your data stays on the device where you log it. We may add optional encrypted iCloud sync in a future update (opt-in only).
Use the "Custom Food" feature. Tap the "+" button on any meal, select "Custom Food," and enter the nutrition details manually. Your custom foods are saved for future use.
Yes. Use the "Share Day" feature to export any day as a .kcalday file. Share it via AirDrop, Messages, or email. Anyone with KiloCal can open and view your shared day.
Delete individual entries within the app, or uninstall KiloCal to remove all data permanently. Because everything is stored locally, uninstalling = complete deletion. No data deletion requests needed.
Camera access is optional and only used for barcode scanning. If you prefer, you can search and log foods manually without granting camera access.
KiloCal uses research-backed formulas (Mifflin-St Jeor for BMR) and integrates with HealthKit for real-time activity data. Your dynamic calorie budget adjusts daily based on your movement, giving you a personalized, adaptive target.
Yes. Go to Profile → Track a Nutrient and choose a 4th nutrient to monitor (fiber, sodium, sugar, iron, calcium, etc.). It will appear on your macro tiles and in meal logs.
Troubleshooting
Check permissions: Go to iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → KiloCal. Make sure "Active Energy," "Steps," and "Weight" are enabled.
Force refresh: Close and reopen the app. HealthKit data syncs when you open the app.
Restart: If still not working, restart your iPhone and reopen KiloCal.
Camera permission: Go to iOS Settings → KiloCal → Camera and ensure it's enabled.
Lighting: Make sure the barcode is well-lit and in focus.
Database coverage: Not all barcodes are in the database. If a scan fails, search manually or add a custom food.
KiloCal calculates your goal based on age, sex, height, weight, activity level, and goal (lose/gain/maintain). If it feels off:
- Go to Profile → About You and verify your stats are correct
- Adjust your activity level (sedentary, light, moderate, heavy)
- Change your goal or weekly pace (faster pace = larger deficit)
Your body is unique—adjust until the goal feels sustainable.
Force close: Swipe up from the bottom, swipe KiloCal away, then reopen.
Restart: Restart your iPhone.
Update: Make sure you're running the latest version of KiloCal (App Store → Updates).
